Near Edwards AFB
This faded sign has lost all but a tiny piece of the glass neon tubing. Its abandoned in a field, approximately 20 meters from a freeway that I guess was built a while after the cafe disappeared. I made a quick trip out to Edwards AFB because someone told me the space shuttle might be coming in today, and Edwards is reserved as a second landing site in case something happens on the way into Florida. It was quite a day. I’d decided to go to Mojave because of the role the airport/spaceport is now playing in opening up a new era of civil spaceflight. I expected maybe to find one interesting picture, instead I found it hard to tear myself away from the place. At the close of day, by chance, I found myself photographing a house belonging to one of the engineers who helped build Spaceship One. He pointed me to a couple of other interesting sites, but I could have been there a while longer.
