This is the other shot that won a place in this years AOP open. Looks great large. My friend Toby thought the focus effect was all photoshopped, but the focus was all done in camera with a funky old Schneider Xenotar 2.8 lens. Its a different style of photography, essentially large format photography but with [...]

I have two winning entries in this years AOP Open competition. Both as it happens have a rural flavour. I’ve spent a lot of time recently in the South West of the USA shooting deserts, which I love, so its great to be recognised for subject matter I can find a bit less expensively closer [...]

Why, in a self designed pyramid house, with the house number attached to the tail section of an aircraft half buried in the ground. Where else? This is a shot I took a couple of months ago of the house of Burt Rutan, the man who designed the X-Prize winning Spaceship One, precursor of the [...]

This shot was inspired by that ‘slit scan’ sequence in 2001 a space odyssey. Returned from the trip and its been the usual enjoyable trawl through 146 gigabytes of raw files with the predictable ups and downs. This is the building of the rotary rocket company. The rotary rocket was a contender for the x-prize which was intended to reach space with a single stage rocket engine. Its return to earth would be enabled by unfolding rotor blades which would act like a parachute bringing it’s crew and passengers safely back to [...]

Another from Mojave showing a view through the picture window. Just like any other general aviation cafe except you can see a rocket through the window, and the first civilian spaceship took off and landed from the runway behind me. Apropos of nothing, this faded sign has lost all but a tiny piece of the glass neon tubing. Its abandoned in a field, approximately 20 meters from a freeway that I guess was built a while after the cafe disappeared.
